Print head dampers serve 3 functions on your printer. Dampers remove air from the line, filter ink one last time before going through the print head and act as a small reservoir for the print head during heavy ink coverage. The most common damper failure happens when the filter becomes clogged or the "O" ring wears out. Over time, the damper catches microscopic particles in the ink. This will limit the amount of ink that flows through the head causing missing nozzles, missing colors and/or banding. If your experiencing any of the previously mentioned problems, it may be time to replace your dampers.
