Nw coast style woodworking carving elbow adze, davis 3M

This is a traditional NW Coast style wood workers, or carvers elbow adze. It's a Davis Brothers #3 Medium and has a curved, and swept, gouge shaped blade with the bevel on the inside of the curve, which takes an aggressive chip. This is not a finishing adze, but rather is a hewing or gutter adze, made for stock removal, and not meant for close in use. The Medium #3 blade takes a large chip than the #3 Small. Its curved and swept blade will cut with, or across the grain, and will really move some wood. This adze is based on designs used by native Northwest carvers for hundreds of years. Using mauls, adzes, and crooked knives they produced both monumental sculptures and finely detailed household items.
I have worked with this type of adze off and on for over 25 years, using them on a wide variety of woods for roughing out some of my larger projects. For the best cutting performance, when sharpening these tools it is important to leave the back side of the blade absolutely flat (no bevel on the back side).
My brother and I are woodcarving artists, and long ago learned to forge and make our own tools. We have made tools and knives for friends, family, and acquaintances for years and are now offering them here. This adze weighs 11.6 ounces, and is 14 1/4 " long, with a lightly curved blade that is 1 1/4" wide. It was made in our shop, using high carbon steel, forged, curved, and ground to shape. It was then tempered to a dark straw color, and sharpened to produce an edge that is both durable and extremely sharp. This adze is handled in Maple wood. The head of the handle is inlaid with a long grain Red Oak gusset which prevents any possibility of splitting in normal use. The blade is epoxied to its bed as well as screw fastened in three places, one under the traditional cord wrap fastening which has been saturated with cyanocrylate for durability. Maple has nice grain, good strength, and solid durability. A traditional wood for tools of this kind. It is finished with coats of polyurethane, and wax. The look and feel of this tool in your hand is smooth, balanced, and workmanlike.
