Fluid, often medications or electrolytes or blood may need to be delivered into a patient s bloodstream accurately over a period of time. An Infusion Pump is used to do this. It is used to control the rate of infusion by means of its pumping. A collapsible bag containing the fluid is suspended above the Infusion Pump with a giving set (thin tubing) connected at one end to the bottom of the bag, & at the other end to the patient via an intravenous needle. The middle section of the tubing is passed through the Infusion Pump to enable control of the fluid.
