Chakras are the seven centers of spiritual energy in the human body representing behavioral characteristics and stages of spiritual growth. The specific psychophysical energies can be activated and influenced by directed spiritual practice. Aroused by the practices of tantra yoga, the dormant spiritual Kundalini energy can be made to leave the first chakra and pierce the chakras above, causing spiritual experiences to occur. The understanding of the seven chakras offers a way to balance one's desires and lead a happier and more spiritual life.
Pieter Weltevrede's paintings beautifully illustrate the chakra energies. The Chakras 2008 Aall Calendar features twelve full-color images, which include a chakra chart, chakra sound symbol and chakra mandalas.
In Kundalini Yoga, a central objective is to merge the solar and lunar energies into the neutral Kundalini energy through breath control (pranayama). The upward flow through the central energy channel, called Sushumna, then pierces the chakras and brings liberation. The lunar energy channel is symbolized as the river Ganga riding the crocodile. The solar energy channel is the Yamuna goddess and river, while the central Sushumna channel is Saraswati, flying on the swan.
