"super clr 2" 11 meter, 27 mc cb base antenna
This is a true hybrid antenna which I have considered building up for almost a year. I finally found the extra time and extra parts to do it.
It is a melding of Hy-Gain's original Penetrator Order 500 and their CLR 2 Order 473 antennas. Every piece in it except for two (the upper and lower horizontal element mounting brackets, and they are reconditioned to like new) are brand new and it uses 100% new Hy-Gain parts and materials. I kinda like to think of it as a "CLR 2 on steriods". Therefore I have decided to call it a "Super CLR 2". I will be producing a very limited number of these (two or three more) mainly because of the lack of parts availability.
It wears a triple horizontal full quarter wave radial element array (as did the CLR 2) as opposed to a quad horizontal full quarter wave radial element array (as do the Penetrators), and the horizontal radial elements are the exact same length as all of the Penetrators at 105" (8'9") as opposed to the original CLR 2's original horizontal radial element's lengths of 103 1/4" (8'6").
All clamping hardware is Ideal brand and is the stainless steel, compression type.
This antenna wears the exact same matching rod/beta rod configuration as do all of the Penetrators and it does have the upgraded 12 gauge power wire installed.
It comes center (27 Mc, 11 meter ) band tuned to Channel 20 and the final SWR performance tests were outstanding and resulted in the following readings:
Channel 01: to 1/2 / Channel 20: 1.1 / Channel 40: to 1/4 ( In other words, the meter indicator barely moves.
All tests were performed while the antenna was pole mounted just eight foot above ground level (between the houses even) with a direct antenna to earth THHN coated 12 gauge, copper stranded wire grounding. A brand new dedicated fifty foot length of Belden RG-213 90% shielded coaxial cable with Amphenol PL-259s was used for all testing. The rig is a Dynasan Cobra 2000 GTL. The meter is a (Wawasee) Dosy JB 1002. Transmission and reception tests were conducted and all contacted/reporting stations confirmed that this antenna outperformed my Imax 200 significantly in all direct and immediate comparisons (no big suprise there).
My permanently installed Imax 2000's tips at 45' and ran on Mini 8 coaxial cable at the time of these tests. This antenna was temporarily installed at eight feet and it's tip was at approximately 30'. Two separate monitoring stations at approximately five to eight miles distance reported that this antenna has a 10 to 15+ db gain in signal strength (dead key) and a 10 to 15+ db gain in modulation (pep) over my Imax.
More importantly (to me) is the fact that adjacent channel interference (i.e. bleedover, spurious signal reception) appears (to me) to be much quieter. And my operating channel signal reception appears (to me) to be much cleaner and is definately more far reaching than is my Imax. No big suprise there either, huh? My Imax gets into my neighbors (two and three doors up) computers but they haven't reported any Rf interference from this antenna so far. Yes, I installed and do use a low bypass filter.
This antenna will have the same excellent wind and ice load tolerances as the second generation Penetrators do and it's M1 vertical section is internally reinforced just like the original Penetrators are.
I have attached two comparison images of one of my refurbished Penetrators and four additional images of my new Super CLR 2s for you to examine. The antenna with the quad horizontal mounting plates is a Penetrator of the original Order 500 design and the antenna with the triple horizontal mounting plates is one of my new Super CLR 2s. It is custom built to equal or exceed the original Hy-Gain Penetrators and CLR 2s nomenclature and operating specifications.
Correct assembly and tuning instructions will come with this antenna. Copies of the original Penetrator Order 500 antenna assembly and tuning instructions will also be included for future replacement materials referencing.
I also have an absolutely brand new and still factory sealed N/O/S Hustler brand .064 Model Super Swamper ground plane antenna which has never been opened and in it s original box ...
A completely refurbished Hustler brand .064 Model Super Swamper 27T Trumpet ground plane antenna (these are big ground planes) ...
Two Penetrator Order 500 (original configurations) 5/8ths Wave Omni-Directional ground Planes
And two (additional) refurbished Antenna Specialists M119 Super Scanner antenna systems ...
I take great pride in my work. I don t get in a big hurry to turn out a job. In fact, I seldom complete more than a dozen restorations a year. This is a retirement hobby to me and not a business or full time occupation. I put most of my items on in the winter months immediately following the new years holiday season.
I primarily offer restoration and sales services on citizen s band and ham antennas which are usually quite rare and which are seldom available especially in new, excellent or even fair condition. However, I do also solicit and perform repair work on specific types of personally owned but damaged or incomplete citizens band antennas which I am familiar with and which I feel comfortable working on.
Bearing this in mind, please enjoy the enclosed actual photos of this antenna.
