Collins 550A-1 transmitter on 80 meters. 500/250 watts

Pictured is a gorgeous Collins 550A-1 broadcast transmitter SN 130 that has been expertly converted to the 80 meter band by the KO6NM. Running the 550A-1 in low power mode (250 watts) is 100% legal. The audio quality of this unit, like all Collins broadcast transmitters is without equal. There are currently 75 Collins fans following the listing, so feel free to ask questions. I am moving planning a move and cannot take this beauty with me!.
You would be hard pressed to find a 550A-1 in this condition anywhere. The case has been stripped and professionally repainted by an antique refrigerator restoration company. Any defects you see in the paint are room reflections. There are a few small paint scratches from moving it around but the overall presentation is stunning!
With the exception of the parts required to move it from the MW band to 80 meters and the addition of an antenna receiver relay, the electronics are all original except for the following: the plate transformer is a modern replacement (see photo), the RF Line Current meter is a Weston instead of a Simpson, the HV rectifiers are plug in solid state units (original 872s supplied upon request). Various boxes for audio and RF interface have been added for your wiring convenience. This unit is on the air now. It requires 240V to operate. Heavy duty casters have been added for easy movement on smooth floors.
The crystal frequency changeover switch needs to be replaced, if you want to switch between two crystals . The unit is currently on 3.870MGHz, but can be frequency agile
300KHz of 3.870MGHz by using an RF generator like an HP 8640B. A BNC to Octal socket adaptor cable for this purpose is included in this sale.
The unit needs two new 40watt GE LUMILINE light bulbs to light up the meter bridge (about $25 each).
The unit is currently using four 4-400 tubes. Two have less than 20 hours on them and two should be replaced if you are planning on extended operation. The included manual calls for four 4-250 tubes, but 4-400 work in both the 20V-2 and the 550A-1.
Local Pickup only please unless you want to pay BIG $$$ to have it moved to your location, as it will require crating and separate packing of the transformers.
